Sports in Abu Dhabi and the UAE were prominently related to the desert sand in the past. Today, traditional sports are still the most cherished activities to the local people even with the spread of modern sports such as golf and F1.


Equestrian
     
 
 
 
The Arabian horse is known throughout the world for its beauty, elegance and unmatched power, drawing the admiration of global enthusiasts.
Abu Dhabi locals have a long and passionate relationship with the stunning Arabian horse.
 
The ancient Arabian horses were remarkably trained by their Bedouin masters as war horses due to their intelligence and outstanding stamina, while at the same time possessing an undisputed reputation for beauty and gentle demeanour towards people.
 

Falconry
 
Falconry is another major passion even for the contemporary Emirati. It is among the many traditional pastimes still practiced in the UAE. Historically falconry was practiced to supplement the hunter’s diet. Today falconry is considered a national pastime if not a high-profile sport, or art as others prefer to call it, in Abu Dhabi. In most ancient cultures falconry skills were a status indicator, where certain species of birds such as hawks and falcons are associated with one’s position or wealth.
 

Camels & Horses racing
 
  
 
 
Camel racing and horse racing are likewise indelible in the local culture. Throughout history, UAE people have maintained a great love of horses and camels and the tradition lives on with the rapid growth of horse and camel racings. Races were originally held in an informal setting, at weddings or festivals. Nowadays, the emirate boasts with racetracks attracting hundreds of locals, residents and visitors. 
 

Boat sailing & diving
 
 
 
 
Dhows (traditional boats) were initially used for fishing. They have been restructured to accommodate all the modern amenities for offshore sailing along the coasts. Dhow cruises and boat races are today one of the best water attractions in the emirate.  Dhow racing evolved from pearl diving which was practiced to extract pearls for trade. Diving is now most common activity in the Abu Dhabi coastal area attracting water activities lovers.

 
 
Hunting with Saluki dogs
 
It is another traditional sport practiced for thousands of years in the region. Arabian Salukis are one of the oldest breeds of domesticated dogs in the world and are well-known for their excellent speed, intelligence, stamina and loyalty to their handlers. They were used along with falcons which spot the prey and hover over them so the Salukis can to chase and catch the pray. Today, this old activity is blooming again with the establishment of the Arabian salukis center. The center conducts many activities to maintain this valuable old tradition, including the organization of the annual Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest.
