The Dazzling City
With its outstanding and incomparable blend of antiquity with modernity, Abu Dhabi is a city of immense promise reflected in its sky-scraper business centre skyline which flanks its signature Corniche, and overlooks the sparkling Arabian Gulf.
These 21st century icons lie harmoniously alongside remarkable cultural landmarks with their traditionally authentic Arab and Islamic architecture.
Running almost six kilometres in length, Abu Dhabi’s Corniche follows the island city’s coastline and is dotted by refreshing public parks and greenery and brought to life with beautiful fountains. This is where residents and visitors connect through the sea. They can stroll the wide pavements, cycle on hired bicycles, jog, roller-skate, or simply stop off at an open-air café to sip a fragrant coffee while watching the world go by. The public beach, which has a nominal entrance fee, is a vast expanse with shaded areas and life guards always in attendance.
The Corniche is linked to the breakwater where visitors can take in the traditional atmosphere of the Heritage Village, a replica of an oasis village, or relax in a nearby café and take in the vista of the bobbing boats in the adjacent marina. Others may head for the 21st century shopping pleasures of the popular Marina Mall.
Gardens abound. The Family Garden runs along the Corniche, and there’s many more with picnic spots, children’s playgrounds and exercise facilities.
The Big Bus Company operates open-top tours along the Corniche and throughout the city – Marina Mall is a hop-on, hop-off stop. Those preferring their views from sea can join a Yellow Boat speedboat tour or a personalised coastline trip from Sea Cruiser.
